Diesel engines produce 10 times fewer emissions the carbon particles, also known as soot, and will come in the size of the 1.9-liter and 2.5-liters, intended for machinery including tractors, forklifts, generators and compressors.
Dick Fotsch, President of Kohler Global Power Group, which includes the power plant and machinery, said the new line is very important for the future of the company.
"This is a good chance we will take advantage of or we will wither away from the market," he said. "There is no in-between position."
This product was introduced in the company's headquarters in Kohler on Tuesday and his company in Italy, Lombardini SRL, which Kohler bought in 2007. Kohler officials, which is a private, would not say what was spent to develop the new engine.
